survivingALS.com was created and is maintained to provide the Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis (ALS) community with the information and source data that addresses the most promising approaches
to treating ALS.
survivingALS.com co-founder, David LaFayette was diagnosed with ALS in April 2005
and together with his brother, Michael, they have traveled to meet with this country's leading researchers,
institutions, laboratories and ALS organizations. survivingALS.com provides an on-line
resource for individuals to research the disease, follow research progress, and share information gathered
through dealing with and living with this disease through our involvement in the ALS community.
No single initiative or standard approach to finding a cure for ALS exists today. As a result, information is
available from a variety of sources, some more helpful than others. In many instances medical institutions,
universities, laboratories or hospitals independently research causes and potential cures for ALS.
While researchers continue to examine the possible causes for ALS there are several theories ranging from
autoimmune response to a virus in which the body attacks it own cells, to environmental causes such as exposure
to toxic or infectious substances. For each theory is a unique approach in treating the disease.
In our steadfast and determined search for information, research, doctors, clinical trials, therapies, etc,
we found that gathering, synthesizing and evaluating published data is difficult and often overwhelming
because of the many theories and approaches to studying ALS. The result; ALS patients, friends and family
are inundated with information about the disease and making educated decisions regarding how to treat the
disease, in many cases, becomes overwhelming.
By leveraging our research and travel across the U.S. survivingALS.com shares that
knowledge with the community while identifying organizations and institutions that we believe have demonstrated
and provide the most relevant and compelling information to fighting and curing ALS.
